Confessions of a Teenage Story Queen

Amongst my friends, I'm something like the resident bookworm. Most people I know would probably tell you that I like to read and it's not uncommon for me to give out recommendations to people I barely speak to. And while talking about books with other people that have read them too is about the BEST THING EVER, it doesn't always work out so nicely. You know what I mean, right? The moment where

YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK.

And it's not just a regular book, it's THE book. It's The Perks of Being a Wallflower or Game of Thrones. It's the book that everyone in the entire universe is suddenly reading and obsessed with and you still haven't gotten around to it. And oh, the SHAME when you have to admit to the person asking about your opinion that you haven't actually read it yet. But you will someday! Eventually! "Are you sure I can't recommend Harry Potter to you again?!?!" ... And suddenly you've lost all credibility. Like, apparently HP is something kids have been reading for a while now? What?

I am slowly (slowwwwly) coming to terms with the fact that I will never have read ALL THE BOOKS. But there are some books that I would very, very, very much like to read before the blogging authorities snatch away my membership card for not reading those things that seem to fuel so many peoples' passion.

Books that I will one day read. No, seriously!:

1. Anything by Melina Marchetta
2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
3. The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson
4. Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
5. Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys
6. Fire and Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore

... and okay, I'm starting to scare myself with the number of ideas that are jumping out at me. We'll just leave it at 6, alright? ;)

I'm coming for you, books!

    1. I know, I know! Melina Marchetta is always the first thing that pops into my head when I think of books I need to read STAT. I'm still pretty nervous that I won't like it though! And gahhhhh, I'm really looking forward to The Sky is Everywhere! Everyone seems to think that :)

  2. That GIF? I LOVE. It's Michelle from Full House and she's running as fast as she can for the thing she loves most: free cake. If your interested, these GIF's will explain the story better. It's funnier if you watch it though :D

    Moving on...

Melina Marchetta! That lady is a genius and I know your probably hear it all. the. time. but you really must check out her books. They are AWESOMESAUCE. I've never had an all-time favourite book before (favourites, yes, but never one book that I could read again and again and babble about forever yet turns my brain to mush, etc.) but now I do: Jellicoe Road. I read it earlier this year and as soon as I was finished, read it again. Saving Francesca and Looking for Alibrandi are also favourites of mine!

I recently read Perks of Being a Wallflower and though I know the majority of readers are fans, it didn't really wow me. I liked it but had some major issues with it, especially Charlie. Despite that I still think it's a book that needs to be read. It's just one of those books, you know?

I've yet to read The Sky is Everywhere but I'm looking forward to! We really must get round to it soon :)

Amazing post, Sonia and I hope you read these books eventually. I did a list of books/authors I wanted to read in 2012 and read everything I wanted to so think I'll be setting some goals for next year. Yay for bookish resolutions!

    1. LOL <3 Full House is like my favourite show!

I do hear it all the time! Ahhhhh Becca I WILL SOMEDAY, I SWEAR! Because um, woah. Favourite book of all-time? Yes please.

Aww, sorry you didn't love it :( I don't even know too much about the book but I hate watching a movie before reading the book so there's at least one reason to read.

Thanks so much! And GO YOU! I've been majorly failing at my reading goals this year... oh well :) Always next year!

  3. This is a fab post, Sonia <3 I understand what you're saying and yes, I've been through it countless times. Before I started blogging, I'd never heard of Divergent or The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices and so on... all the books that were such a hit in the blogging community and I still feel bad about that. But I guess you don't HAVE to read books just because everyone else is reading them - at least that's how I feel. In your list, I've only read The Sky is Everywhere and I didn't actually enjoy it that much. Hopefully you'll get to pick up these books some day but surely you can just read the ones you WANT for now?

    Thanks for sharing <3

    1. Oh yeah, for sure. Sorry if it came across like I was saying everyone should read the same books. Those are just books that I personally am interested in reading AND happen to have garnered a lot of praise. I totally want to read these!!

  4. LOVE THAT GIF!!! Okay...with that having been said. I FEEL THE SAME WAY.

I haven't read The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Sky is Everywhere, Anna Dressed in Blood and Between Shades of Gray. Next year? Next year I'll read them. Maybe.

    1. So you've read Melina Marchetta and Fire/Bitterblue? Not bad, not bad! We should read some of these together... make a competition out of it ;) That seems to motivate us LOL.

    1. Aww, I just saw on your blog that you gave Perks a 3/5. It seems a lot of people are divided on this one... Even more interested in reading it now! :P Thanks!

  6. I've been wanting to read Perks since high school, and finally (as in 10 years later) picked it up a few weeks ago. I was really impressed with it, and can't believe I waited so long to read it. Although since I took over 10 years to finally read it, I can't quite say anything about the fact you haven't read it yet.

    1. YAY, so glad that you liked it! Haha yeah, hopefully I'll be able to cross some of these books off sooner than that... I'm sure there will be PLENTY more 10 years down the road from now though ;)

  7. Ahhh YES. I agree with everything here. But I refuse to accept that I can't read all the books. XD I AM GOING TO BE NAIVE and try and read all the books. Muah ha ha ha.

But I haven't read The Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Perks, Game of Thrones (currently reading though) so I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL. But let's fix this together Sonia bb!

Oh and The Fault in Our Stars. I read it just the other day. I'm so glad I did though. I feel like a proper nerdfighter again!

*GASP* No... no DoSaB? D: Gahkjfhskjdhf, my MOST SINCERE recommendation: READ ITTTTTT! Favourite book of 2012 right there, omg <3 The feels that book gave me are unreal. OOH. How's Game of Thrones?! And seriously, we should have a read-along or something...

Haha, yaaaay! *Nerdfigher sign* I know exactly how you feel... It was this huge relief when I started the book (and then I kind of lost control of my heart so...)

  8. This is such a great post! I love how you said that you're coming to accept that you won't be able to read all the books, and in a sense of OH NO THIS CAN NOT HAPPEN, I agree. Doesn't mean we bibliophiles won't get severe eye strain from trying!
Also, thank you so much for your awesome comment on the guest post I wrote on Brodie's blog! It means a lot.x

  9. Um, hi there. I saw this days ago and I kept forgetting to comment (my bad) but yeah!

OMG OMG OMG ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY.

    Love <3

I have The Perks of Being A Wallflower on hold at my library, so I should be getting that soon. The Sky is Everywhere has interested me solely because I heard about it through Tahereh Mafi's blog and apparently that book did to her what Shatter Me did to me so I must check it out! Also, Game of Thrones, both books and show, have been recommended to me several times.

Another one I want to read really badly? Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Want to see if we can read that one together?

    - May :)

    1. HEEEEY BIRTHDAY GIRL! <3 <3 <3 I feel so special that you took the time to comment on your special day :'D

How did I know that you would love the Anna thing? LOL yes, you are totally a big contributing factor for me wanting to read it so badly! Oooh, hope you love those others too :D I think Game of Thrones may be a bit graphic for me but I'm curious to see what you think.

That book FREAKS ME OUT but I would totally read it if I had you holding my hand for the journey!

  11. I can never recommend the people I know who never read any books because what they like... I don't read. I have also not read any of those books. It took me till last year to realize that I may have been the reader in the group but I never read THAT many books. I've read 300 and that seems like a lot but compared to others it is not. There is no possible way to become an expert on books because you read at the moment what you like or what you are forced to read... and those might not be what are popular. Basically I know where you are coming from.
