Kate Winters has won immortality.

But if she wants a life in the Underworld with Henry, she’ll have to fight for it.

Becoming immortal wasn’t supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she’s as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he’s becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate’s coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.

As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.

Henry’s first wife, Persephone.

For the longest time, I've seen reviews popping up for Goddess Interrupted that didn't find it as good a novel as the first book of the series. I started reading with those reviews in mind and I was pretty nervous! Needlessly nervous, I can now say. If anything, I enjoyed Goddess Interrupted even more than The Goddess Test.

Aimée Carter has ramped up the tension and suspense in this sequel. There are high stakes involved and I for one couldn't put the book down. Some major drama arrives right before Kate can be crowned Queen of the Underworld but the groundwork for the emotional turmoil the characters will go through is set up even before that.

Kate and Henry are both certainly characters with their sets of issues and those are apparent throughout the book. There's Kate, who is feeling self-conscious and unsure of herself for basically the entire book and there's Henry who seriously needs a lesson or two on showing proper affection. There were times when I wanted to grab them both by the shoulders and shake them out of it but I also really understood where they were coming from. Just the fact that Carter was able to shake up my emotions so much says a lot about her skill as a writer in my mind.

Just as in The Goddess Test, I loved the Greek mythology aspects of the novel. I'm such a sucker for mythology and even though this series portrays a very light version, the exploration of the Underworld and the Gods/Goddesses was one of my favourite things about the book.

Ending on another jaw-dropping cliffhanger, Goddess Interrupted is a fantastic sequel.

Cover Comments: Nothing EXTRAORDINARY! but it's pretty enough.

  2. I thought The Goddess Test was okay, so I wasn't sure whether I'd read the sequel. I think I will though. I really like drama and turmoil! Thanks for the review :)

  4. Err... soo... I just found out why I'm so far behind on your blog? It's missing from my feed >:/

I did a massive re-order, and I must have lost it. I am SO sorry!

Aaah! I am SO excited to hear you liked this one! I've seen a lot of lukewarm reviews, but this looks FUN! I LOVE myth-based stories (I swear, greek is second only to Norse... or maybe on par... or maybe more. UGH! I DO NOT KNOW! :D)

BUT WONDERFUL! I REALLY enjoyed your review, and the tension! The drama! The WHY-WON'T-YOU-JUST-PLAY-NICELY-ALREADY CHARACTERS! I have GOddess test at home. It's moving up my TBR so I can read this, tooo! :D

  5. Oh Good, I am happy you enjoyed it. That's why I always put in my reviews that it may not be for me but people who enjoyed Goddess Test mostly likely will love it, too. :)

  6. I'm not as patient or kind toward these characters as I would like to be and I think that's why I didn't enjoy the first book very much. Bearing your review in mind, while balancing out the low expectations I have for the sequel, I'm going to into this one with my mind blank and see what happens. I'm hoping I enjoy this one way more.

  7. "...and there's Henry who seriously needs a lesson or two on showing proper affection." <-- LOL I love this line so much!!! x) I adooooored Henry in The Goddess Test, so even though he was very broody in this book, I agree completely that it's testament to how awesome Aimee Carter is as an author! ;)

And thank you so much for clearing up the confusion that this book wasn't as good as the first! I remember reading The Goddess Test in a five-hour drive up north to go camping and enjoying it immensely, but I've heard the same things as you, so it makes me SO happy that you enjoyed this book even more! :) <3 I am no longer extremely wary about reading this book -- now all I can feel is excitement!

Amazing review, Sonia! I can already feel the tension through your own words! :D <3

  10. I haven't read this first one in the series yet. I have it but I never got around to it. I'm glad that you were disappointed. I'm curious about this series now...

  11. I was sadly one of those that was a bit disappointed in this, but I am SO glad to hear you loved it! It balances out the book universe :D

But dude. YES. HENRY. Someone needs to enrol him in a School of Affection. Guy has been around a long time, but he's freaking hopeless expressing his feelings haha. Guess that's what happens when you spend most of your time beneath the earth. Even though Kate and Henry frustrated me, like you, I could understood the root of their frustrating actions/emotions, which is talent on Aimee's part.

    Fab review, Sonia!

  13. I was pretty disappointed in TGT because of how prettily everything was wrapped up. Glad TGI is better in terms of tension, think I'll try this one before giving up on the series.
