Cover Correction

Cover Correction will be a semi-regular feature I do over on the blog to spotlight some recent (or maybe even old) cover changes to series. Some changes I hate and some changes I love, so I'd love to be able to talk about some of those! Also, if you have any better names for the feature, feel free to put out your suggestions, my super creative readers! :)

The Nightshade series by Andrea Cremer

Nightshade (Nightshade, #1)
Nightshade (Nightshade, #1)Wolfsbane (Nightshade, #2)

This is definitely the cover change that stands out to me the most. I think the blogosphere kind of exploded when images of the new covers started to surface.

Okay. I have tried really hard to like the new set and while I don't mind the covers for Nightshade or Bloodrose, I HATE Wolfsbane's cover. I don't know what Penguin was intending with that pose Calla's in but um, I'm not a fan. And the colouring? It is so dark that the whole thing looks almost black. I thought it would be better IRL but it's really not.

Preferred: Original

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)

I did like the original cover (sparkly!) but I like the new one so much more. I just think it's very representative of the tone of the story. Tahereh Mafi's writing is definitely one of a unique style and I think the whimsical sort of things they do with Juliette's eye reflect that.

Preferred: New

Blood Red Road by Moira Young

Blood Red Road (Dust Lands, #1)Blood Red Road (Dust Lands, #1)

Okay, I haven't actually read this book yet so I can't judge based on accuracy to content, but I can say which is more visually appealing to me! I'm kind of sad they changed the direction for these covers. The original looks amazing IRL with the texture of the paper feeling kind of rough. I just loved the overall look of the original, especially with the colours. That sad, the new isn't bad by any means. I still like it.

Preferred: Original

What are your thoughts on these cover corrections? I'd love to hear them! :)

  1. I like the new Nightshade, but the pose from the girl on Wolfsbane is a bit.. weird indeed. I like the moon in the background though :p

Shatter me is difficult, because I like both covers. I like how the background shatters on the old cover, but the eye is so intriguing!

And Blood red road, definitely the old one. I also haven't read it, but I'd pick the first one up in the store. The other is less appealing.

  2. I definitely prefer the old Nightshade covers, I reallly don't like the new ones. I do really like the new Shatter Me cover though, but I am annoyed my covers won't match now when Unravel Me is released :P. As for Blood Red Road, I actually prefer the new cover! I don't know why...it seems a bit more bold to me.

  3. I think this is a great idea for a post! Especially since I felt like my feeling for a book can change depending on the cover based on my expectations.

  4. I prefer the original covers for the Nightshade series as well. Seriously, talk about a downgrade.

  5. I prefer the original covers for Nightshade and the new cover for Blood Red Road. However, I really dislike the new Shatter Me cover . . . it's different and I like that, but I still don't like it as much as I do with the original one. The thing about changing covers is that people - like me - have the original hardbacks so the sequel covers in the future won't match. It's a shame, really. :(

  6. I LOVE THIS POST, Sonia! I think I should make one myself too, LOL considering how there are quite a few cover changes in different books lately :P And I agree with you on all of your thoughts! I prefer the original Nightshade cover, original Blood Red Road cover (although the new one looks really cool) and I prefer the new Shatter Me cover too! (Isn't the eye GORGEOUS?)

Awesome post, Sonia! ♥ Thank you for sharing it with us! :)

  7. Love these sort of posts!! I totally get what they were trying to do with the new nightshade covers, cause they look like adult urban fantasy, but they just don't work, and the old covers really stood out. I love the old SM cover, but it really doesn't fit the story whereas the new one does. Definitely prefer the origianl BRR cover too

  8. Oooooooh, I never saw that cover for Wolfsbane! Oh my goodness! It's so pretty! Why did they change it? SAD! :(

I DO love the new Shatter Me cover... but I loved the old one, too, and it's grown on me more and more... and at the time, I always said I loved it, but didn't get it... so... yeah :)

  9. I kind of refuse to buy the Nightshade series because I dislike the covers so much! I think they are terrible. The originals were so pretty and they reflected the story well. But what can I say. Publisher knows best.

    I like this feature.

  10. SONIAAAAA! Hi, sweetie!!! *waves* I love love LOVE this new feature -- it's such a genius idea because so many covers are getting remade nowadays, and I love being able to gush about the pros/cons with someone else! x)

For the Nightshade covers: I DEFINITELY prefer the originals to the new ones! They were just so pretty and stunning and different and eye-catching -- and Calla admittedly looks a little indecent in the new Wolfsbane cover LOL :') But I really, really like the new Shatter Me cover more than the first! Like you said, it just suits the whole story so much more!

Brilliant post as always, Sonia! You always have such amazing ideas -- that's one of a million reasons why you rock the world! x) <3
