I've decided to do a joint review for these books because, 1) I don't want to bore you all with 2 reviews of the same series in a row and 2) my thoughts for both are very similar anyway.

Okay folks, here's the deal: if you haven't started this series yet, go away and order them from your library/bookstore and GET IT DONE. I don't know what the heck I was thinking waiting so long to pick the first book off my shelf but this series made it to my ultimate favourite shelf SO fast.

Elisa. This girl, guys. Elisa is such a force to be reckoned with. She's determined, strategic and smart and her development is breathtaking. I love that Rae Carson strips her of her crutches (friends, family, etc.) in these two books until only she's left and that while she stumbles along the way, she makes it to the end. Elisa discovers who SHE is and learns to love that person and I could not be more proud of her as a reader.

The supporting cast in this series (Hector) is amazing. I'm so invested in these characters (Hector) and I would just like to inquire as to where I may find my own (Hector)? These characters are there to support Elisa, as a friend and queen, but also exist independently of her. Certain characters in particular aren't afraid to call Elisa out on her bad choices and it makes me love them even more.

My favourite part of this series (trumping even romance!) is without a doubt the political aspect (says the International Studies major...). Ruling a kingdom, especially during a time of such political turmoil, is by no means an easy job and I loved watching Elisa learn to navigate the waters. There's such an emphasis on her struggle between being a good ruler and sticking to her beliefs, of keeping distance from the situation but also being invested in her people. She's dealing with more experienced people, more powerful enemies and she still never backs down. These books get an A+ for not holding back with the harsher realities of ruling a kingdom.

And finally, the part you all care about: romance! I won't say much so as not to be overly spoilery, but <3. Let's just say I did a lot of squealing and swooning and grinning into my pillow at 3 AM with these. Rae Carson has written one of the strongest, sweetest couples I can remember reading about and I think re-reads are in order for that alone.

As typical of most epic fantasy, Elisa, the protagonist, has a monumental destiny to fulfill. The problem? She has no idea where to start.

At the beginning of the novel, Elisa is acutely and painfully aware of her 'weaknesses.' But as the story carries on and she is tested in ways she never could have imagined, she rises to the challenge marvellously and comes to see her strengths as well. I loved the personal development in Elisa more than anything else in this book. I have so much respect for Elisa's growth into the strong, confident woman she was too scared to let herself become. The fact that her strong points come in the form of her wisdom and knowledge and that she actually gets to use that to turn the tide in a war was refreshing to read.

Religion is definitely a part of this book but I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice to turn away because that makes you feel wary. The theme is handled with care and expertly intertwined with the rest of the plot. I really appreciated reading Elisa begin to question things she never had before and start to form her own opinions regarding her faith.

It's a testament to Rae Carson's writing that this novel could pull me in so many settings and directions (that I devoured in half a day, no less) and still never feel disjointed or rushed. I hope that the next book delves into further detail about the magic and the Godstones because while I'm satisfied with what I was given, I want more more more!

Despite going into this book with huge spoilers (spoiler. alerts. please.), I really really enjoyed it! And thank goodness I don't have to wait at all for the next one.

I had been dying to read Hallowed ever since completing Unearthly back in 2011 and it didn't disappoint! While I can't say that I loved it to the degree that I did its predecessor, it was still a fantastic novel and I'm so glad that I finally made room for it in my reading queue.

Clara still gets all my love. She is just funny and real and I want her as my best friend ASAP. I thought there were really important developments made in her character and the relationships she had with other characters in this novel which was really great to see happening. Except for...

Tucker. Don't get me wrong, I still adore Tucker, but seeing him and Clara together just didn't give me the same unadulterated joy it did last time around. I thought the progression of their relationship was realistic given the circumstances but I won't lie and say it didn't make me kind of sad. I grew to like Christian more in this book and I'm glad for the focus on his character... but still. Clara + Tucker 5ever.

I'm both excited AND nervous to see what's going to happen next, because I feel like this book ends on such a crossroads, with big changes happening all around. I don't know, it felt like a pretty bold move for YA to me, but I'll have to reserve judgement until I can see what happens in Book 3! (Which luckily, I don't have to wait for, bonus!)

Overall, lots of fun to read with cool mythology and a brilliant protagonist. I wasn't completely won over like in the first book but I am still SO glad I read it.

While I found Sweet Evil entertaining and original, I was stopped from totally loving it because of the characters and some all too convenient plot details.

The characters in this novel felt a little too cookie-cutter for me. There's Anna (the "good girl" with eeevil temptations) and Kai (the "bad boy" with a "good heart"). There were plenty of moments that I was still able to read the book and enjoy the situations the characters were in but there was also an unfortunate number of times where my annoyance with the characters clouded that enjoyment.

And it was unfortunate because the mythology was so COOL! The Nephilim are the children of Dukes of Sin with the mission to corrupt as much of humanity as possible. I mean, really... how unique and potentially awesome is that? I think Wendy Higgins did a great job at exploring some of the possibilities of this situation while still leaving room for plenty more.

I must say though, some of the thrill that the concept gave me was lost with the annoyance I felt at the romance and some of the other plot points. A lot of things that happened in the novel seemed to be thrown in for no particular reason (other than maybe to give the characters some time to obsess over each other). All of the big problems were solved so easily. Perhaps with more of a struggle on the road to victory, I would have appreciated the characters' efforts more.

Recommended if you're looking for the classic paranormal romance with a unique mythology!

Cover Comments: You know that classic image of the popular kids whispering mean comments about the less popular ones and making no secret of their mockery? YEAH. That's what I can't help but think when I see their poses. I like the background pictures of the trees and the fog though! So spooky.

There were a couple of huge things that made me want to read this book. First, I'm a big fan of Kelley Armstrong's other YA series, The Darkest Powers (oh Chloe and Derek!). Second, this book is set in CANADA! Never mind that I've never been to that side of the country but my national pride wouldn't let me skip this book!

One of my absolute favourite things about Kelley Armstrong's series is her characters. Although they aren't all immediate favourites (hi Derek) I still feel something for them straight from the start. It takes no time at all for each character to leave their mark on me and willingly or not, I'm invested in their story. The Gathering was no exception. I immediately fell for the main character, Maya, who leads this story so well with courage, confidence and a great sense of humour. The secondary characters were wonderful additions as well and I especially loved Daniel and Maya's parents!

Although this is probably the smallest town I've read about (it has less than 200 inhabitants!), Salmon Creek is definitely not what it looks like at first glance. It's owned by a medical research company and all of the people in the town work for it. There were some great possible plot points for later on being suggested and I can't wait to explore the whole mystery further! Aside from that, the town itself was stunning. The lush and exotic environment was described so well and I wanted nothing more than to zoom away to the forest and observe some cougars!*

So, did I enjoy The Gathering? Absolutely! However, I do think it very much has that 'first novel' feel to it. There's a lot of set-up being done for the next books and it made the novel feel slow at parts. It definitely speeds up toward the end but there were moments that the plot felt a bit underwhelming. Still, definitely a great start to the series!

PS - YOU NEED TO READ KELLEY ARMSTRONG.

I had an inkling of worry when I started this novel that the switches between past and present would become confusing or tiring but wow, was I wrong. If anything, the time changes just added to the overall mystery of the story. I loved seeing the constant contrast between how vibrant and wonderful (at least on the surface) the past had been and how Nikki's trip to the Everneath had changed that. There was this feeling of being on the verge of discovering something at every chapter and it just made me want to keep reading more more more.

Nikki was really a fantastic character to get into the head of. Although drained (literally) from her time in the Everneath, Nikki has this strength and courage that I couldn't help but admire. Her whole purpose for returning to Earth warmed me to her instantly and it was her kind and selfless personality that kept me cheering her on.

And it wasn't just Nikki that was incredibly well-written. Cole and Jack were both fascinating characters in their own right. I hear the term 'bad boy' tossed around a lot in the blogosphere but Cole? Damn. There is clearly a lot of emotion and information hiding just under the surface with Cole and I loved the little glimpses of them, whether it was genuine affection for Nikki or something much darker. This boy was such an enigma and I'm having a blast trying to figure him out! And JACK. Jack is sweet, understanding and just there for Nikki, no matter the time or place. I loved him so. much.

Although we don't get as deeply immersed in the mythology as I would have hoped to (but hey, there are still 2 more books!) it was definitely something that held my attention. I love the spins Brodi Ashton has taken on the myths of Orpheus/Eurydice and Hades/Persephone. And speaking of spins... Everneath features a killer ending. I can safely say that I did NOT see that one coming!

Grace, Gretchen and Greer may look identical but their lives and interests are another matter entirely. While Grace - the smart, sweet and environmentally-friendly sister - was my favourite of the three, I thought they were all well-written characters that showed some growth in the novel. It was no trouble at all to differentiate between their perspectives and I found it fascinating to see how they differed as a result of their completely opposite upbringings.

Sweet Venom may not be the first Greek mythology based YA novel but it stands out with its fresh new look at an older myth. I loved how Tera Lynn Childs rewrote the original Medusa storyline and incorporated various mythological beasts. Watching the girls learn about them and take them down never stopped being exciting!

With some truly fantastic side characters, Tera Lynn Childs perfects the balance between real, human life as a teenager and a side job of monster slaying. It was great seeing how each 'life' affected the other and I can't wait to see how it goes forward in the next book.

An excellent start to the series!

Although backed up by an interesting idea, Carrier of the Mark ultimately fell short for me for several reasons.

I've said it before and I have no doubt that I'll say it again: I am a character person. While I didn't have a problem with most of the supporting characters (one huge exception), I could not stand the main character. Megan came across to me as so weak and selfish, and she was way too clingy to Adam for my liking. Speaking of Adam, I wasn't too huge a fan of his either. While I can sort of see his motives, he seemed controlling and condescending for a large chunk of the novel.

I don't think (and please, correct me if I'm wrong) that I'm generally one to rant about insta love in my reviews but wow, this book. I rolled my eyes so. many. times. while reading this book. Megan and Adam become inseparable and willing to destroy the world to be together after probably a maximum of a few months. Yet, I don't really recall them doing much talking or interacting beyond make-out sessions and a few behind-the-scenes get-togethers. If there is going to be such a strong connection and pull in a couple, I want to actually be witness to them bonding together. In this case, I felt like one second they were staring at each other across the room and the next they were in pain when they weren't together for an hour.

The lore of this novel was one part that managed to capture my attention for the most part. It was all interesting information and I was quite eager to learn more about the history of how Megan and Adam came to be. That said, I do wish the information had been a bit more staggered in its delivery. It was at times a lot to take in after a long period of pure romance and such with Megan and Adam. There were also parts of the plot that made absolutely no sense to me in that they sound so implausible... but I guess it's called fiction for a reason.

Unfortunately not a book for me.

Dear Insurgent,

You must have been feeling pretty anxious before I read you. I mean, all I seemed to be doing (in between desperately wanting you) was worrying about whether or not you would be able to match up to the awesomeness Divergent was. It's enough to give any book an inferiority complex. I shouldn't have worried though. You completely DESTROYED any fears I'd set up - I love you just as much as I did Divergent despite your differences.

First off, I have to start some loud and wild applause for Tris Prior. I am consistently amazed by the utter strength and power that Tris possesses and the way that she seems to find it within herself right when she needs to. By no means whatsoever is she invincible or fearless (if anything, I think this book definitely proved that) and there is something achingly real and raw about her character. I didn't necessarily agree with all of her decisions but I know that I'll cheer for her until the end.

Four. I didn't really know that it was possible to love Four more than I already did but somehow I do. I can't give higher praise than saying that I LOVE the way that he treats Tris - exactly the way she deserves. He does not coddle or talk down and treats her like she is strong and capable. Insurgent, would you mind recommending this to a few of your bookish friends? Tris and Four encounter some bumps on the road but in the end emerge stronger than ever. They are absolutely one of my favourite couples EVER.

I am a little stunned at the amount of ground that's covered in you, Insurgent. From exploring the Amity and Candor factions to even more daring missions, there was never a moment I wanted to take pause. This series is jam-packed with action and I'm starting to suspect every page has been charmed with a spell to make it compulsively readable. Or maybe that's just Veronica Roth's magic writing.

So Insurgent, if you'd like to magically transform into your sequel so that I can sneak in a read... I'm on board. Just saying.

Characters that are utterly charming, a vibrant setting and a brand new type of paranormal creature make Die For Me the brilliant supernatural read it is.

Kate and her sister Georgia have had their entire lives uprooted. In a very short time period, their parents have died and they've been shipped off to France to live with their grandparents and finish off their high school careers. So it's no wonder that Kate has a bit of trouble adjusting. When we first meet Kate, her day-to-day tasks are repetitive and lifeless. It doesn't make for a very exciting beginning but I thought it did a good job in revealing some of Kate's innate nature, which is always important for later on.

Kate herself was a character that I liked. While not necessarily a new favourite heroine, Kate came off as brave and mature. Again, this obviously had to do at least a little with her parents' death but regardless, it was great to read about a girl that could be level-headed when the situation called for it. Vincent and his "family" were all so wonderful. They had a familiar, easy dynamic when they were together and I looked forward to whatever moments Jules Vincent appeared on the page.

The development in Kate and Vincent's relationship was certainly quick but it made me smile. They're a sweet pair and the quick way that they fell for each other just meant that we could speed up the actual story. I mean, the final showdown at the end... that was cool.

The idea of revenants is such a unique spin on zombies - I loved it! It was fascinating to hear about their history and the way that they worked. I especially liked that we got to get into the heads of the actual revenants a bit and see what they really thought of the job that came with it.

Aaaand finally, we have the setting - Paris. France has got to be the most stunning place to set a book. Granted, I've only read two novels set in the Country of Love (the other being Anna and the French Kiss) but wow. Amy Plum makes fantastic use of the beautiful setting available to her and it adds a spark to the entire novel.

Exciting and compelling.

Do you know those books that make you completely lose track of time? The ones that you start, and then realize you've totally plowed through like three hours later? Unearthly is one of those books.

I am so in love with this novel. It has all the elements I need for sparkles and rainbows in my mind: great writing, FABULOUS characters, realistic emotion, vibrant setting... need I go on?

Clara is a marvellous main character in that she's just so normal (mostly). Due to her angel genes, Clara is smarter, faster and stronger than her classmates, but it doesn't make her invincible. She still struggles with making friends and the right choices. She's friendly, funny and can stand up for herself. In short, Clara just rocks.

Then we have the boys: Christian and Tucker. Now, I like Christian. I think he's a nice guy - honourable, kind and just generally nice. He treats Clara well. Tucker, though, is... WOW. Now, maybe like me, you've heard all about this Tucker and how "amazing" he is. When we were first introduced to his character, I was less than impressed. That guy? THAT'S the amazing Tucker? Oh my goodness though. I fell in love with Tucker before I even knew what was happening. There is just something about that friendly cowboy that I find so endearing. I want more Tucker, please! Him and Clara are too adorable.

The angel mythology of this book is stellar. It's all revealed gradually throughout the book and I get the sense that there is a lot more to come, but I did love what little I learned. Clara's mom (half-angel) is the one with all the secrets but she's very tight-lipped and leaves us, for the most part, in the dark. Still though, I'm excited to learn all about the Intangere (full angel), Dimidius (half-angel), Quartarius (quarter angel - like Clara!)... everything!

So in addition to every other person on the planet many readers, Unearthly now comes with my stamp of approval. Read it and be sucked into the land of angels and TUCKER!

Shatter Me, your futuristic setting is bleak and dangerous, no doubt about it. The rich and powerful take what they want for themselves and leave scraps for the rest. Society is run with an iron fist and terror is always brimming under the surface. Through all of this though, there is that underlying feeling of hope. New possibilities were definitely introduced and I can't wait to see where they take off in the next book!

Now, I can't help but mention the way your story was written. Tahereh Mafi, I want to hug you and absorb your talent. The English student in me kind of wanted to pull out my different coloured highlighters to pick out all of the literary devices (ahoy there, metaphors!). The writing is effortless and captivating, with such a distinct style.

One of my new favourites.

This review is going to be a little different. I took notes while reading for all of the stories, so here is a tiny review for each of them.

Giovanni's Farewell by Claudia Gray

I liked this one! It had a simple writing style, but I think it really worked in this case. The story itself was very sweet and I loved the tight sibling bond between Cairo and Ravenna.

Scenic Route by Carrie Ryan

As always, the quiet and poignant desperation of Ryan's stories left me breathless by the end. I liked the emphasis on making choices and the stark reality of the urgency in survival. I have to say that I also really liked the younger sister, Sally!

Red Run by Kami Garcia

This one was a really interesting story - I only wish that it could have been expanded into something a bit longer. While it started off a little mysterious (that was the point, I believe), it definitely picked up by the end. Once the story reached its climax, things got intense!

Things About Love by Jackson Pearce

I loved this story! It was a really sweet, hopeful portrayal of desiring love. It was wonderful to see just the yearning for it and not necessarily TRU LUV 4EVA. If anything, I now can't wait to read As You Wish!

Niederwald by Rachel Vincent

Wow, do I ever want to read the Soul Screamers series now! My favourite parts of this story were those that delved into the lore. The story has creatures I don't normally get to read much of, so it was a nice change of pace. My favourite character in this one was definitely Syrie, who I found fascinating.

Merely Mortal by Melissa Marr

I really liked it! It felt a little choppy at the beginning, but it's always tough for a short story to flow as smoothly as a full-length novel from the get-go. Still, it was sweet and fun.

Besides, I am game for anything with Donia and Keenan because, really? SO CUTE.

Facing Facts by Kelley Armstrong

I know I'm saying this a lot but: LOVED! Kelley Armstrong does a fantastic job of reminding readers of past events (the Darkest Powers trilogy) without bogging down the story. This short story was fun, suspenseful and sweet.

(For those that have read the DP trilogy, our favourite wolf is back in this one <3)

Let's Get This Undead Show on the Road by Sarah Rees Brennan

Ahh, my favourite one! This was hilarious, heart-warming and it's almost ridiculous how much I loved it. It was fabulous to see the band come together and there were some really funny lines, as is always the case with Sarah Rees Brennan. Even amongst the less serious parts, there is some depth.

Bridge by Jeri Smith-Ready

A story that is both hopeful and strong.

I liked the prose in the novel, but I'm really not the best judge of that, so don't take my word for it. Even without that though, the story had really great pacing and managed to explore quite a bit for a short story. Although there aren't very many words, they pack a powerful punch. Nice job!

Skin Contact by Kimberly Derting

Oh, this story was so good. It is heartbreakingly desperate.

Kimberly Derting is a master at building up the tension and suspense. The story is short but impactful and I'm really excited to meet Rafe in Desires of the Dead (I've read the first novel, but not the second). This one had a different tone from a lot of the other stories (they all had different tones, really) and it was a nice break for the nature of the book.

Leaving by Ally Condie

I love Ally Condie's writing - both here and in Matched. Sara, the main character, was very compelling and her emotions were perfectly portrayed for me. I thought the whole concept of the Globe, and the story in general, was unique and interesting.

At the Late Night, Double Feature, Picture Show by Jessica Verday

Fun, fun, fun! This was a very creative, imaginative piece. I found it entertaining and just so much fun. Really though, I'd love any story with the Rocky Horror Picture Show references this one had (there are a LOT).

IV League by Margaret Stohl

First off, I want to say that I love this title. I think it's so inventive and clever.

Unfortunately though, I found this story a little boring. The concept was interesting enough but something about the execution just didn't click with me.

Gargouille by Mary E. Pearson

I really liked this! There were some very strong emotions that came through and I was utterly entranced by the sections on gargouilles and flight. Also, guys, there is something about Étiennes. Are they all this awesome? Is there like an unwritten rule somewhere that says all Étiennes must make my heart melt?

The Third Kind by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I really like Barnes' writing style. Don't ask me what about it I like because I'm horrible at explaining that. I found this story so interesting! I want more. While the ending truly doesn't have much resolution at all, it worked for me and I liked how it almost came full-circle.

Automatic by Rachel Caine

I have to say, I've never really been interested in the Morganville Vampire series before (there's SO MANY BOOKS) but the joint forces of this story and Jen's ABCs of Morganville Vamps list have swayed me. I really liked this story!

Vanish is a fantastic sequel to Firelight, with new elements and dimensions introduced, but also some of the same things that pulled you in the first time around.

In Vanish, we have Jacinda and her family back amongst the pride. Things are far different from how they used to be, and Jacinda is being treated with animosity from all angles (well... maybe not all...). There was a perfect balance for me in that even when Jacinda was doing a bit of moping, I wasn't annoyed because of how sorry I felt for her. It just felt like a very accurate portrayal of what she would be going through.

I think a lot of people are going to be surprised with the transformations we see in this novel. Quite a few of the characters are revealed to have more to them than what first meets the eye, something that was very well done. Now, personally, I was always pro-Cassian, but it was definitely nice to see that my thoughts of what may be true weren't completely ridiculous. Cassian is such a fantastic character in this book! He really looks out for Jacinda, even when she's not exactly cooperating.

Now, while this novel does definitely have a different feel than the previous one of the series, I liked it even more! The action heats up by the end and some truly shocking events come to pass. I am already thinking about when I can get my hands on Book 3, which I'm sure will be even better than this one!

I really recommend this series if you haven't started it yet. There is action, romance and fascinating mythology. What's not to love?

Cover Comments: I love it! It's so similar to the Firelight cover yet so different at the same time. The contrast is great and both of the covers tie in so well to their respective stories. I have no idea what Book 3 will feature, but I'm excited to find out!

For such a thick book, Starcrossed certainly didn't take long for me to read! The mythology was entrancing and I loved the romance, characters and danger of it all.

The Scions, the family history, the nightmares that Helen has basically every night... all of it captivated me entirely and really was one of my favourite parts of the novel. Angelini stays true to the mythology for the most part but also puts her own spin on it, which gave it a nice edge.

When Helen and the Delos family (Lucas in particular) first met, I thought the book might throw off sparks or something - talk about unexpected! All of the interactions between these characters took me by surprise in the beginning and then after the shock had worn off, I grew very comfortable with it. The Delos family has that warm family bond and Helen makes a great addition to the picture.

Personally, I thought the book had an excellent balance between light and dark moments. There is romance, but there is danger. Just when things start to settle down, the characters are yanked into a more serious situation. The fight scenes were fantastic (strategic and physical!) and I hope that we see a lot more of that in the future books.

A magificent debut novel!

The main character, Skye, is easily relatable. She studies hard so that she can get into a good college and skis after school to feel that rush of cold air and the exhilaration that follows. She also actually has real friends that she hangs out with - Dan and Cassie were great characters and you could see the easy comfort the three of them had together.

Cue Asher and Devin, and suddenly Skye's normal life has been flipped upside down (and then rattled around a bit for good measure). These two "cousins" were polar opposites and I was as torn between them as Skye for a good portion of the book!

The first half of the novel eases you into Skye's world before things really start to heat up. I must say, my favourite part of the novel was the mythology behind it all and I'm so curious to see how that will affect everything in the future. There is definitely an awesome foundation that's been set and I imagine that the sequels will be even more exciting!

Fair warning though: the ending of this novel kills. It is like the definition of cliffhanger. Honestly, the only thought that was running through my head when I completed the book was, "that's just a really mean joke, right"? Followed by, "wow, I really liked that" of course!

Cover Comments: This cover is so beautiful. I can't pinpoint exactly what it is I love about it... maybe a combination of elements? I do have to say that I LOVE the different fonts they chose for the cover and author name. Harper, you sure do have some pretty packaging.

I don't read many ghost stories at all. The only ones I can actually remember reading are the Darkest Powers trilogy by Kelley Armstrong - if you even count that. Still, I was excited to read Hereafter. The mystery and romance that the summary promises drew me in and I'm a sucker for gorgeous covers like this one.

Hereafter opens with Amelia thinking of her death. It's sudden, it's spooky, it's dramatic - and I loved it. Amelia is hopelessly lost as to who she is and what will happen to her, so as readers, we get to piece together her old life with her. Besides trying to figure out her past, Amelia does grow into her own throughout the course of the novel. There's nothing I love more than some good character development and I was glad to see that happen with Amelia.

While there are some creepy bits (if you're anything like me, you'll love them), a huge aspect of the story is also the romance between Amelia and Joshua, the first one to actually see Amelia after her death. The chemistry between Amelia and Joshua is apparent as they grow closer, and I loved this sweet, understanding boy. That said, I do almost wish Joshua had been a little less understanding. I mean, you find out this girl you've met is a ghost and that only you can see her... wouldn't you be a little freaked out?! I sure would!

The entire time Amelia and Joshua are trying to get to know each other, darker forces are at work as well. Eli, another ghost, is dead-set on having Amelia for himself and makes no secret of it. Still, it's hard to know how evil he really is, as he switches around at a heart-pounding pace. I liked the break from the classic bad guy act, as I really do think Eli was a well-rounded character with many facets to him.

A tale that is both haunting and sweet, Hereafter attracts your attention and pulls you right in.

The thing I appreciate most about this novel is that the process of Laurel dealing with her grief felt very, very realistic to me. What would you do if a police officer knocked on your door to tell you that your family had died in a horrible car accident? Do you know? Because I have no idea. Would I cry or just stare blankly at the walls or be angry or try to go on like normal? No idea. None. For the most part, Laurel doesn't really know either, even after the event has taken place. She's trying to take control of her life but everything is spinning out of control, even if it appears to be fine. There are ups and there are downs, but I just love that it all made sense.

I really liked Laurel's character as well. I could relate to her a lot (at least from before the accident). She studies hard, is close with her family, and mostly keeps to herself. It was positively chilling to see how her life is affected after the accident. My heart broke for her and the pain she went through. However, as sad as I was that her family had died, it was mostly because I could see how it destroyed Laurel and her grandmother. We don't get to know much about her family and who they were (although I could connect with her dad most of all), but I think it worked for this particular story.

There is a romantic aspect of this book but it doesn't take centre-stage and instead builds slowly and sweetly. As stated in the summary, there is definitely a connection between David and Laurel and I loved observing as it progressed at a natural pace.

Elegantly written, The Beginning of After is a book that I recommend to readers looking for an emotional journey. Well done!

I am... amazed. Delirium is a stunning novel that destroyed all expectations that I had going into it. Was the plotline great? Yes. Did I connect with the characters? You bet. Was Lauren Oliver's prose as gorgeous as in Before I Fall? Heck yes!

One thing that I've appreciated in Lauren's novels so far is the character development. As human beings (or vampires, werewolves, zombie cats, etc.) I expect to see people shaped by their experiences and interactions with other people and things. Lauren Oliver does not disappoint. If I wanted to, I could map out the ways that Lena changes throughout the novel: feelings, actions and thoughts. Better still, the journeys of the characters actually make sense in correlation to the events of the book.

And then there's... Alex. Alex who laughs, listens, cares and lights Lena's world up like a chain of Christmas lights. I loved everything about this boy and the relationship between him and Lena was beautiful from the beginning to the end. Seeing them get to know each other - fall in love - stands out so brightly against the dull and heartless background of the place they live.

Speaking of that, how creepy is this story's backdrop? A place with no love sounded horrifying to me at first - as it should! I don't think I really sat down and considered the possibilities of that until much later though. The worse part of the no love deal to me personally is the fact that a parent can't love their child. They provide them with the basic necessities because of instructions for the government but would they actually care if their child got sick? Probably not.

I can't leave without gushing again on how amazing I find Lauren Oliver's writing. There are sentences and passages that I feel like tattoo-ing all over my body because they were so lovely. It actually took me a while to read this one because I kept going back to re-read certain things. Each sentence is strung together with care and they deliver a punch of emotion every time.

Finally... the ending. How do you end a book like that?! Seriously, you might as well as just rip out my heart and stomp on it! I am dying - DYING - to read the sequel. March 2012? Not soon enough!  

Cover Comments: I like it well enough but... so much less than the new covers! Honestly, if my copy wasn't signed, I might buy the new one just because it's pretty and will match the rest of the series when it comes out. I still might. Can't resist the pretty.
